On a blustery day when it felt very much like fall, Department of Conservation and Recreation Commissioner Rick Sullivan made an inspection of the Lynn/Nahant beachfront.

He inspected the clean-up operation going on to rid the railings and cement walkways of seaweed, the repainting of light poles and the general condition that exists along the beachfront.

“I’m pleased with the way everything has come out,” he said. “This is a much friendlier place for visitors than when I began about four years ago,” he added.

During Sullivan’s tenure on the DCR, the Governor Deval Patrick appointee has taken seriously what his boss told him when he was just starting out on $25 million of improvements.

“Enhance the visitors experience,” is what the governor told me.

“That is precisely what all of us have tried to do,” he said. “And what’s more, I believe we’ve done that.”

Two members of the Friends of Lynn/Nahant Beach met with Sullivan Thursday morning.

Anne Goldstein and Jane Cahill applauded Sullivan and his staff.

“The DCR under Rick Sullivan has done more in the last four years than anyone in the last 25 years,” said Cahill.

“We use the beach all the time. We walk the beach. We live along the shore and our lives are better for Governor Patrick and Rick Sullivan,” she said.

Goldstein agreed.

“DCR has been wonderful and now that the smell is gone, what could be better than that,” she said.

DCR is now reinventing the Nahant Causeway with new period lighting and a refinished and widened roadway which will be made safer by the work being now being done on it.
