St. Mary’s High School hockey goaltender Sarah Foss will be featured in this week’s “Faces in the Crowd” section ofSports Illustrated magazine.
“Faces in the Crowd” recognizes superlative performances in amateur sports and Foss’s achievements for the undefeated Lady Spartans hockey team are certainly worthy of such recognition.
A sophomore from North Reading, Foss has a 36-0-4 record in net for the Lady Spartans, who have a 90-game undefeated streak. Foss has eight shutouts and a goals-against-average of 0.52 this season.
Jeff Newhall, director of athletics at St. Mary’s, was excited about Foss’s honor and the national attention it brings to the school.
“I think her contribution on the ice for our girls hockey program is obviously not just a local story – it’s become a national story,” said Newhall. “Sarah is definitely one of the keys to the girls hockey team going forward. But more importantly, she does very well academically and she’s been a tremendous addition to our school community both on the ice and in the school.”
Foss is also a member of the school’s lacrosse team that had an 18-0 record in the regular season last spring.
Foss is the second St. Mary’s girls hockey player to be honored by Sports Illustrated. Abby Gauthier was recognized in “Faces in the Crowd” in the Feb. 4, 2008 edition of the magazine after becoming the all-time leading scorer in state history. Gauthier, who finished her spectacular high school career with 358 points, is a member of the Providence College women’s hockey team.
