“A gem of a guy.”
That’s how former Item sports editor Paul Halloran described Bobby Dwyer, the former graphic arts foreman at the daily newspaper who died last week.
Mr. Dwyer was very involved in the Lynn sports community, having served as president of East Lynn Pop Warner, a position later held by his son, Nahant Police Chief Robert C. Dwyer.
Mr. Dwyer was past president of the Lynn Tech Boosters and a member of the Boosters at Lynn English where he took considerable pride in the achievements of his grandchildren in the football and cheerleading programs. Mr. Dwyer also helped out the Harry Agganis Committee each year.
State Rep. Robert Fennell was among the many residents who paid tribute to Mr. Dwyer at memorial observances Sunday and Monday.
Fennell recalled how Mr. Dwyer would often come to the Capitol Diner for lunch.
“He really enjoyed our scallops,” recalled Fennell. “My father and I knew him for many years. He was just a wonderful person who did so much for the kids in our community. He brought joy to so many people.”
Bobby Dwyer was a terrific all-around person and a highly respected leader in our city.
“He will be sorely missed,” said Halloran. “There are few guys who have done more for Lynn kids than Bobby Dwyer. And it was all Lynn kids even though he was affiliated with English and Tech. He was the best.”
