Wyoma Little League, home to one of the North Shore’s most successful youth baseball and softball organizations, has been selected as the host of the 2015 Massachusetts State Little League Championships.
It’s a huge honor for Wyoma as league officials had to submit an extensive proposal to the state board citing its suitability as a host for the state’s most significant showcase for 11-12-year-old baseball players.
“We’re really excited to be selected as the host – it’s been a long time coming,” said Wyoma president Tony Luciano. “It was one of my goals when I became president, if we ever installed lights, to bring the state tournament back to Wyoma. We haven’t hosted it since 2001.”
Wyoma Little League, with help from local businesses including the Solimine Landergan Funeral Homes, installed lights at Reinfuss Field this season. Having a lighting system at the field is one of the requirements to be considered as a host of the state tournament.
Luciano and Wyoma officials put together a proposal package and presented it to state Little League officials at a meeting in Framingham. Luciano was informed in November that Wyoma had been selected.
Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy was supportive of Wyoma’s proposal and she offered her congratulations to Luciano and the board and her office’s assistance.
“The mayor was very supportive and she said her office will help us in any way possible when we start planning the tournament,” said Luciano.
One major decision that Luciano and the Wyoma planning committee will have to make is whether the 2015 tournament will have a double-elimination or round robin pool play format.
“We’re going to begin planning for the tournament next month,” said Luciano. “There’s a lot to plan for the tournament.”
Luciano said he will be attending the 2014 Little League State Tournament in Beverly to view some of the organizational aspects of game day preparations. Wyoma is in the process of selecting a chairperson for its organizational committee. There will be an official Little League state tournament souvenir program and souvenir baseballs inscribed with “Wyoma State Tournament 2015” that will be donated by Diamond Baseball.
