Congratulations, St. Mary’s State Champions

Congratulations to the St. Mary’s High School girls basketball team on winning the 2014 Massachusetts state championship.

In recent years we’ve come to expect such excellence from the St. Mary’s High School athletic program, especially its girls teams, notably softball, hockey, and basketball who have all earned state title banners.

In fact, this was the second title in four years for St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall, his staff, and three illustrious seniors, Brianna Rudolph, Jennie Mucciarone, and Sharell Sanders.

For Rudolph, it’s been an incredible season and many Lynn observers say that she has scaled to the top of an elite list that includes such greats as Monique Lee, Helen Ridley, Dee Jackson, and Nicole Foissette.

Rudolph will attend UMass/Lowell. Sanders will head to Caldwell College while Mucciarone will matriculate at Tufts University, further indication that the school recognizes that academics is a valuable component that sets the foundation to the athletic experience and a college education.

It was great to see Head of Schools Grace Cotter Regan and Principal Dr. Mark DiFabio at the State Tournament games. The support of the school administration has been instrumental in the athletic program’s success and we know the student-athletes appreciate their presence at the biggest games in their lives.

As the athletic director, Jeff Newhall can take double pride in the achievement of his state champions. It’s been a great season and it should be an emotional awards banquet as Newhall says farewell to a trio of amazing seniors and presents state championship plaques to the varsity players.
