When Walter Hoey showed up at an event to take a photo for the Lynn Item, you could count on two things: he would be greeted with respect and warmth by everyone in the room and the event would be covered professionally and accurately through his majestic lens.
Walter Hoey, an award-winning newspaper photographer who was one of the legendary faces of the Lynn daily newspaper for years, passed away Nov. 27. 2015. He was 87 years old.
Mr. Hoey was a pleasure to work with in the newspaper industry. Those reporters who covered events and saw him arrive with his camera knew that his photos would bolster and complement your coverage.
Mr. Hoey brought personality and energy to each assignment. He was enthusiastic, courteous, and proud of his work and the product that the newspaper staff delivered to its readers each day.
There are scrapbooks all over Lynn and the North Shore with photos by Walter Hoey. He played an important role in the daily life of this city and in such neighboring communities as Swampscott, Lynnfield, and Peabody.
Mr. Hoey was a credit to the Item, to his family, and to his profession.
Those of us who had the opportunity to work with Mr. Hoey will remember him as a great photographer and for simply being a terrific person.
We extend our condolences to the family of Walter Hoey and thank them for allowing us to be a part of his wonderful life.
