Guzman Heats up the Garden Parquet Floor

When Lynn English basketball coach Antonio Anderson learned that Jarnel Guzman had transferred from St. John’s Prep to English, his first thought was: “I was happy.”

Guzman, a junior guard, continues to bring smiles to the entire Lynn coaching staff. Tuesday night in the Division 1 state semfinals, Guzman had 22 points, including four 3-pointers, in a 76-62 victory over Newton North. He scored 11 points in the first eight minutes of play.

“In the warmups, I loved the feel of the court,” said Guzman. “I was hitting shots early. Coach [Anderson] always tell me if I have an open shot, if you can make it, take it.”

Guzman said he has tremendous respect for Anderson, who played in the NCAA championship game at Memphis, and in the NBA for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“I know he [Anderson] has played at the highest level of basketball, and my mom and my parents said that you should surround yourself with people who have the same goals as you,” said Guzman. “He’s helped me get to another level and I really appreciate him for all the stuff that he’s done and that he continues to do. With him as my coach, he’s going to put his best out as a coach and I’m going to gibe him my best, too. ”

Guzman is happy to be a Bulldog playing for a state basketball championship. “High school has been way more fun than any year I have had,” said Guzman.
