No sooner had 2010 become 2011 when Lynn Police were called to the scene of a stabbing and a shooting.
What a nice how do you do for the New Year.
What a great way to welcome 2011.
At about 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning, a Lynn woman, Cheryl Marino, 55, was shot.
She was shot, it turns out, by a stray bullet that went through a window in her Dana Street home which hit her.
She was shot in the chest, according to police reports.
Dana Street is a well kept, racially mixed residential style street in a quiet neighborhood of the city.
Witnesses told police two cars were apparently seen speeding away from the scene.
Witnesses also told police they heard racial slurs being exchanged at the corner of Dana and Williams.
Marino was rushed to the hospital where she is recovering from the gunshot.
Police said it appeared Marino was not the intended victim, causing neighbors to wonder – who was the intended target?
Fast forward a few hours later, in what Lynn Police referred to as an unrelated act of violence, an 18 year-old Lynn man was stabbed in the chest and rushed to the Union Hospital in serious condition following an alleged dispute with friends inside a home on Parkland Avenue, police said.
Giovanni Jenkins, 19, of Lynn, a Jefferson Street resident, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and with intent to murder.
He was arraigned in Lynn District Court Monday where he pleaded innocent.
And so the New Year has begun for some of the sorriest people in the city.
