The US Postal service is attempting to cut a $13 billion loss it will accrue this year. So it is preparing to close thousands of postal outlets, layoff perhaps 100,000 postal employees and raise the cost of mailing a letter to .50 cents.
All of that is expected to cut the deficit by about $4 billion according to US Postal officials.
What then to do about the remaining $9 billion that must be made up?
No one knows the answer to that question.
The world has changed drastically during the past decade. The US Postal Service hasn’t changed with it in order to survive.
That’s a shame but the biggest shame is the .50 cent letter that will shortly become the $1.00 letter.
Why not raise it to that now and be done with it?
