Saturday night the electricity went off for several thousand of us who live along Ocean Street all the way to the Swampscott line and along Lynn Shore Drive to the same place.
The electricity had been off about an hour and many of us had lit candles in our homes when the fire department got an emergency call from a large Ocean Street apartment house. The response was extraordinary between the fire and police.
Several people were evacuated from the apartment house and a small fire was put out in one of the apartments.
Had a fire gotten a foothold in that building when the electricity was out, dozens of people would have been in trouble and would likely have had to fight for their lives in the darkness.
The overwhelming response of fire and police was welcome and was rapid and was efficient.
