Congratulations, Boverini Committee

We want to offer our congratulations to the committee who organized the Walter Boverini Basketball Tournament that was a huge success once again.

Lynn English and its fine athletic director Gary Molea proved to be an outstanding host this year. The tournament was a first-class event with the introduction of players, All-Tournament individual and champion team trophy presentations, enthusiastic crowds (although attendance was a down a bit this year) and good sportsmanship displayed by the athletes from Classical, English, Tech, and St. Mary’s.

The competition was intense and the games were exciting as the schools vied for the title as top team in Lynn. Classical, led by coach Tom Grassa, took home the boys’ title by defeating coach Kevin Moran’s reigning Division 4 state champion St. Mary’s in the finals, while St. Mary’s, led by coach and athletic director, Jeff Newhall, won the girls’ title by besting coach Fred Hogan’s reigning Northeastern Conference champion Lynn English in the finals.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the efforts of the Classical girls team, led by coach Tom Sawyer, the English boys team, led by coach Mike Carr, and the Lynn Tech boys and girls teams led by coaches Marvin Avery and Kevin McDormand respectively.

The Boverini Tournament is truly one of the most anticipated events on the Lynn sports calendar. There is something special happening when teams from Lynn schools compete against each other as the City Swim Meet affirms each year.

It was great to see Mrs. Christine Boverini, wife of the late Senate Majority Leader, at the tournament and supporting it each year. This event is a fitting tribute to Mr. Boverini, a teacher, coach, and tremendous legislator who rose to a position of prominence and power in the state government.

Thank you to all who have made this tournament the great event it has become.
