Lynn high school principals Gene Constantino (Classical) and Thomas Strangie (English) and directors of athletics Bill Devin (Classical) and Gary Molea (English) have a very important decision upcoming about the request by Saugus High to return as a member of the Northeastern Conference.
As Lynn sports fans know, Saugus decided to leave the NEC to become a member of the Cape Ann League. That left a real void in the Lynn schedules. Saugus is not only a great geographic fit for the two Lynn high schools but athletes in both communities have grown up competing against each other in youth sports leagues, notably the District 16 Little League and District 1 Babe Ruth Tournaments. Saugus has always been a traditional NEC rival to Classical and English.
Saugus director of athletics Rob O’Leary is a long-time “NEC guy,” having been a hockey standout at Saugus High himself as well as the former director of athletics at NEC member Winthrop High School. Rob understands that Saugus High’s true home is the NEC and we hope that Lynn administrators will welcome back the Sachems as soon as possible to the NEC, which we feel is one of the best leagues in the state.
