The Lynn Babe Ruth baseball organization is not only enjoying success on the field but it’s again serving as a very capable host for District 1 tournament play. Lynn Babe Ruth, headed by president Jim Beliveau, is the host of the District One 14-Year-Old Tournament being held at the Clancy and Edmunds Fields in the Ben Bowzer Complex.
Lynn will also host the 13-Year-old State Tournament that begins on July 20. Eight teams, including the powerful Lynn contingent led by manager Steve Moccia, will compete for the state title and a berth in the New England Regionals.
The Lynn 13s have advanced to the semifinals in District 1 play in Danvers. The Lynn 14s swept their first two games Saturday and Sunday. The Lynn 15s play Revere in the semifinals Thursday at 5:30 in Beverly.
As for his organization hosting tournaments, Beliveau said, “it takes a lot of work.” The fields appear to be in excellent condition. “We’ve been getting nothing but compliments,” said Beliveau. “The fields are in tremendous shape.”
Beliveau said the list of tournament volunteers includes Jeff Earp, Dave Raymond, Jim Burt, Tom Dill, Ricky Germano, Steve Moccia, and Jim Giguere. The concessions stand coordinator is Megan Leydon.
BABE RUTH NOTEBOOK
Beliveau said there are 150 baseball players in the Lynn program. A Senior League for players ages 16 through 18 has returned after a two-year hiatus.
Buckingham Browne and Nichols sophomore Katie Burt, one of the best high school hockey goaltenders for her age group in the country, is playing for the Lynn Babe Ruth 15-Year-Old All-Star team. Burt pitched a three-hitter in Lynn’s 4-0 win over Wakefield Saturday. Swampscott, which had played in the Senior and Junior Little League Tournaments, has joined the Babe Ruth circuit this year. Interestingly, one of the All-Star players on this year’s Swampscott 14-year-old team is C.J. Howard, a left-handed hitting outfielder who is the son of former Major League baseball pitcher Christian Howard, who once played for the Boston Red Sox. Swampscott also has players from Nahant on its roster.
John Kasian is overseeing the Lynn Babe Ruth softball organization. Lynn will be hosting the State 16-Under Tournament and the NE Regional 14-Under Tournament.
